This year, we welcome Mrs. Stephanie Desens to the role of Associate Principal of Curriculum and Instruction! Here are a few questions and answers to help get to know her better.
– What was your previous role at North?
Last year I served the Appleton North community as the dean of students for grades 9 & 10. Looking to gain more experience in a leadership role, I took the opportunity to be the dean at Appleton North.
– What made you want to go into education initially?
I have wanted to be in education ever since I was in 4th grade. I used to take extra worksheets from the recycling bin at school and try to “teach” my younger brother whatever we were learning in school. I love to pass on knowledge, but in a way that was fun and engaging. When I was a senior at Appleton East, I was able to do an internship at McKinley Elementary School for the second part of my school day; I was in the life skills class, working with our students with special needs. Those experiences cemented my love for working with students to achieve whatever their goals are.
– What are you most excited for this school year and even going forward?
In my role as Associate Principal, I’m eager to support our Appleton North Community in providing the best possible education for all of our students. I’m particularly excited about helping to implement some of our staff’s innovative ideas. These initiatives will not only support students who may be struggling but also create more opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills.
– Do you have any favorite hobbies/what do you do in your free time?
Outside of the school day I spend the majority of the time with my two-year-old daughter, Bailey. This summer we frequented the parks, pool, library and Appleton’s Building for Kids. Outside of that, I enjoy reading (I read 14 books this summer!), watching rugby matches, and occasionally playing computer games.
– What has been your favorite part of being one of the Associate Principals so far?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my job has been witnessing the growth of former students. It’s truly inspiring to see them transition into successful young adults and achieve their goals in high school.
– Have you seen differences between this role and your previous role at North?
I think so far, the largest difference between my roles has been that as an Associate Principal, I have the opportunity to work much more closely with our teachers and staff, whereas last year my primary focus was on students. While that will be a large shift for me, I am so incredibly excited to be a part of the amazing things that are happening in Appleton North classrooms.
