Lock down lifted after police say suspect in custody after report of shots fired on North Union Street

Dismissal will proceed normally

Appleton North went into a precautionary lock down on Tuesday afternoon after police responded to a report of shots fired in the 2900 block of North Union Street.

The lock down was lifted about 2:30 p.m. after police announced they had the suspect in custody. Dismissal will continue as normal, according to a release from the Appleton Area School District.

During the lockdown, which lasted about an hour, students were instructed by administration to remain in their Hour 6 classes until the lockdown was lifted. Students missed their Hour 7 classes because of the lockdown.

Authorities were dispatched to the scene at North Union Street shortly after 1 p.m., The Post-Crescent reported from a statement released by the Appleton Police Department.

North was not the only school impacted: Apple Tree Connections, KinderCare on Ballard Road, YMCA Child Learning Center, Edna Ferber Elementary School, Franklin Elementary School, Classical School, Huntley Elementary School, Einstein Middle School and Kaleidoscope Academy were all asked by police to lock down, The Post-Crescent reported from a statement released by the Appleton Police Department.

The Appleton Police Department said Xavier Middle School, Xavier Elementary School – Marquette Street campus, Fox Valley Lutheran High School and Mount Olive Lutheran School were also on lockdown.
